Best Practices for Supporting and Caring for LGBTQ+ Youth

Wednesday, June 26, 2024

1 - 2:30 p.m. CST

This training will address the well-being of LGBTQ+ children in congregate care. LGBTQ+ children and youth are overly represented in the child welfare system and often invisible. Research show that LGBTQ+ youth are often discriminated against in congregate care due to their Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity and Expression (SOGIE) which leads to a higher rate of suicide, running away, homelessness and entry into the juvenile justice system. This course will highlight the fundamentals of SOGIE, as well as present strategies for congregate care staff to be welcoming and affirming. This training will also speak to different concepts to meet the permanency, intersectionality and needs of LGBTQ+ children in congregate care from best practice when engaging LGBTQ+ youth around their SOGIE to placing transgender and nonbinary children and to honoring their privacy.
